Awesome Godaddy Groupon Deal $25 gets you $70 in credit

0 komentar

Godaddy.com is running a pretty sweet Groupon.com deal. Buy $70 worth of credits for $25 .  The deal ends Sunday at 12:00 AM.

You buy $70 worth of credit for $25, then over the course of a year you use a .99 coupon each new registration.  You could feasibly end up with 70 new domains for $25 or roughly 25 cents per domain.
Godaddy.com, always has it’s share of cheap domain name registration coupons out there on the web so for you extreme couponers this might not be a reach.  DomainShane posted 3 domain registrations codes for .99 today in fact.  I think this is a first for a domain registrar to run a Groupon deal and my hunch is that it won’t be the last.

How does the internet work ?

0 komentar

It's hard to imagine life without it now. Every year, engineers create more devices to integrate with the Internet. This network of networks crisscrosses the globe and even extends into space. But what makes it work?
To understand the Internet, it helps to look at it as a system with two main components. The first of those components is hardware. That includes everything from the cables that carry terabits of information every second to the computer sitting in front of you.
Other types of hardware that support the Internet include routers, servers, cell phone towers, satellites, radios, smartphones and other devices. All these devices together create the network of networks. The Internet is a malleable system -- it changes in little ways as elements join and leave networks around the world. Some of those elements may stay fairly static and make up the backbone of the Internet. Others are more peripheral.
These elements are connections. Some are end points -- the computer, smartphone or other device you're using to read this may count as one. We call those end points clients. Machines that store the information we seek on the Internet are servers. Other elements are nodes which serve as a connecting point along a route of traffic. And then there are the transmission lines which can be physical, as in the case of cables and fiber optics, or they can be useless signals from satellites, cell phone or 4G towers, or radios.
All of this hardware wouldn't create a network without the second component of the Internet: the protocols.Protocols are sets of rules that machines follow to complete tasks. Without a common set of protocols that all machines connected to the Internet must follow, communication between devices couldn't happen. The various machines would be unable to understand one another or even send information in a meaningful way. The protocols provide both the method and a common language for machines to use to transmit data.

HP Introduces New IPS and Security Services

0 komentar

A core component of modern enterprise security is the IPS (Intrusion Prevention System). HP is now advancing its TippingPoint IPS portfolio with the new NX platform, which it says can deliver as much as 13 Gigabits per second of IPS inspection throughput. The purpose-built, modular platform enables administrators to plug in new ports or different types of ports. "The operating system is the TippingPoint Operating system, and the box is a custom built box with custom silicon to make sure we get the best performance," Callahan said.
The NX is also what is known as a Next Generation IPS (NGIPS), device as it bundles in application awareness. The NGIPS market is a competitive one, with rivals like IBM debuting its own system. The IBM Security Network Protection XGS 5000platform, announced in July, can handle up to 2.5 Gbps of inspected traffic.
HP's product includes a reputation feed, which enables the TippingPoint IPS to block access to known bad IP addresses, whether outbound or inbound.
"The NX platform brings in the idea to also do security based on reputation feeds," Callahan said. "So it's not only pattern and filter matching."

Announcement by ICANN

The Fellowship Program has demonstrated success in its mission to build capacity in the ICANN multi-stakeholder environment through focused interactive engagement between newcomers to ICANN and community members at each of the ICANN meetings. The program seeks to identify members of the Internet community who either have not previously been able to participate in ICANN processes and constituent organizations, or those who require further exposure to the Internet community and its work but cannot travel and attend a meeting without financial support. This outreach program seeks participants from developing regions and countries of the world, in order to help create a broader base of knowledgeable constituents who will become the new voice of experience in their regions and beyond.
Applications to become an ICANN Fellow are assessed for each meeting by an independent selection committee. Priority is given to applicants who: meet minimum program requirements; are current residents of developing and least developed nations in the five ICANN regions; and are interested in participating in the ICANN multi-stakeholder process and its supporting organizations, advisory committees or stakeholder groups. An effort will be made to include participants from the Asia-Pacific region as the site of the ICANN meeting.
All confirmed fellowship participants must comply with the terms and conditions of the Fellowship program, as outlined at http://www.icann.org/en/about/participate/fellowships/terms-conditions. As stated within these terms and conditions, ICANN is a California non-profit public benefit corporation and must therefore comply with all the laws and regulations of California and the United States. Fellows are responsible for obtaining all travel visas once accepted into the program. ICANN will purchase tickets for Fellows after all necessary documentation has been obtained and Fellows demonstrate that they have obtained all necessary travel visas.
Once all of the requirements for travel are met, the Fellowship program arranges for and covers the costs for airfare and hotel, as well as providing a stipend to assist with some meeting and subsistence costs. The stipend is provided after each selected candidate successfully completes the requirements of the Fellowship program, Recipients will be expected to actively participate in and contribute to ICANN processes during and after the meeting. As always, registration for ICANN's meetings is free for anyone wanting to attend.

Former Motorola Employee Sentenced to Four Years Imprisonment for Trade Secrets Theft

0 komentar

A former Motorola employee, charged with the theft of trade secrets from the company, was sentenced by a federal court in Illinois on Wednesday to four years in federal prison, the U.S. Department of Justice said.
Hanjuan Jin, 41, a nine-year Motorola software engineer, conducted a "purposeful raid to steal technology," U.S. District Judge Ruben Castillo said while imposing the sentence, according to a statement by the department.
The Judge did not however find her guilty of three counts of economic espionage for the benefit of China and its military, although he found by a preponderance of the evidence, that Jin "was willing to betray her naturalized country," according to the department. Jin had earlier been convicted by the court of three counts of theft of trade secrets.
Judge Castillo's order was not immediately available on the website of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division where Jin was on trial.
Jin, who is a naturalized U.S. citizen born in China, was stopped from traveling on a one-way ticket to China on Feb. 28, 2007 at O'Hare International Airport by U.S. customs officials who are said to have seized from her possession more than 1,000 electronic and paper documents from Motorola.
The trade secrets relate to the proprietary iDEN (Integrated Digital Enhanced Network) technology of Motorola which was subsequently renamed as Motorola Solutions, after its separation from Motorola Mobility in 2011. Jin was said to be secretly working for Sun Kaisens, a Chinese company that developed telecommunications technology for the Chinese military, at the time of the customs seizure of the documents.
Jin pursued employment with Sun Kaisens in 2006 while on sick leave from Motorola, and worked for the company on projects for the military between November 2006 and February 2007, according to the Justice Department.
On Feb. 26, 2007, Jin returned to Motorola, purportedly to resume full-time work, but was not given any assignments. On that day and the day after she accessed documents from Motorola's internal network and was also seen removing from the premises physical documents and other material, according to the Department of Justice. By Feb. 27 she had also sent an email to Motorola appearing to volunteer for a layoff.
The federal authorities said they also recovered from Jin multiple classified Chinese military documents, written in Chinese and in many cases marked "secret" by the Chinese military that described certain telecommunication projects for the Chinese military.
In a submission to the court on Tuesday, Jin's lawyers from the Federal Public Defender Program had asked for a non-custodial sentence, citing evidence admitted at trial and the court's findings that Jin intended to prepare herself for her next job with the material seized from her, and did not plan to share it with Sun Kaisens.
The government had in a filing on Monday asked for a sentence for Jin of between 70 to 96 months of imprisonment.
Jin was also fined US$20,000 and ordered to remain in home confinement with electronic monitoring until starting her sentence on Oct. 25.

Samsung launches Windows 8 ATIV line with new smartphone, three tablets

0 komentar

Samsung announced an ambitious line of Windows 8 mobile devices using the ATIV name on Wednesday, including an ATIV S smartphone with a 4.8-in. HD display and three tablet PCs.
The lineup, unveiled in Berlin, Germany during a webcast, also includes an ATIV Tab that runs Windows RT and two Windows 8 x86 tablets that have magnetically attachable keyboards called the ATIV Smart PC and the ATIV Smart PC Pro.
The company didn't offer pricing or availability information.
Samsung also showed off an array of diverse products atop the Android-powered Galaxy line at the event, announced a slightly larger Galaxy Note II, and unveiled a Galaxy Camera that works over cellular networks and Wi-Fi.
Samsung said it wants to stay ahead of the pack of mobile device manufacturers, and sees Windows 8 products as a way to do so.
"We have an unrivaled range of products in the Windows 8 environment," said Damian Cusick, general manager of Samsung UK. "The Samsung ATIV line-up of Windows 8 products is simple, powerful and beautiful."
The ATIV Smart PC Pro, with an 11.6-in. touchscreen and an Intel Core i5 processor, targets professionals, Cusick noted. He also called attention to the Windows RT tablet, the ATIV Tab with pre-installed Office productivity applications to allow Office and Word document sharing. "Nothing will change from the PC documents you share with co-workers," he said.
The ATIV S smartphone is also Office compatible, with "various Windows-based content that [runs] in an optimized environment," he added.
All four Windows ATIV devices "blend the device and content ecosystem perfectly...so [users] can get things done," he said.
The ATIV S smartphone has a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and will work over HSPA networks like those offered by T-Mobile USA and AT&T.
The ATIV Tab offers a 10.1-in display and an 8,200 mAh battery, which is at the high end of tablet batteries.
ATIV tab
The ATIV Tab runs Windows RT.
The ATIV Smart PC and Smart PC Pro are equipped with a digital stylus, called the S Pen, that Samsung has updated from its original appearance with the Galaxy Note. It now has 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity and is slightly thicker.
Both are 11.6-in. Tablets, and each has a detachable keyboard dock that allows it to be used as either a clamshell laptop PC or a tablet PC. The Smart PC has a battery life of 13.5 hours, while the Smart PC Pro runs up to eight hours.
The Galaxy Note II, which ships in October globally, has a 5.5-in. display, larger than the original 5.3-in. display, and will come with redesigned S Pen. Its larger screen stays in the same sized body, however, although the increase in screen size bumps it up slightly to a 16:9 aspect ratio.
The ATIV Smart PC is slightly thinner and lighter than the Smart PC Pro. The Smart PC is 11.96 x 7.5 x .38 inches and weighs 26.4 ounces. The Smart PC Pro has the same height and width but is .46-inches thick and weighs 31.2 ounces. The ATIV Tab is 10.4 x 6.6 x .35 inches and 20.1 ounces. The ATIV S smartphone is 5.4 x 2.8 x .34 inches and weighs 4.7 ounces

Facebook agrees to tighten its privacy policies

0 komentar

Facebook has agreed to tighten its privacy policies after it settled a long-running dispute with the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
The social network was accused by the regulator last year of introducing "unfair and deceptive" changes to its privacy policies in 2009, including settings that made users' confidential profile information public without their consent.
Facebook also shared personal information including status updates, geographic location and marital status with advertisers and third-party applications without telling users, the FTC said.
News of the settlement, which ties Facebook to biannual privacy inspections by an independent watchdog for the next 20 years, came just a day after Google was fined a record $22.5m (£14.4m) by the FTC for circumventing privacy protections on Apple's Safari web browser.
The allegations laid bare by the FTC about the two internet giants will heighten concern about the security of peoples' private data in some of the most popular digital destinations. Facebook boasts more than 955 million active monthly users, according to its latest figures. Google controlled two-thirds of the US search market in June and its share is even greater in most European countries, said the metrics firm ComScore.
The FTC said Facebook was liable for "a broad range of deceptive conduct" relating to what it tells users about their private profile information.
The bulk of the charges against Facebook relate to its overhaul of users' privacy settings in November 2010. The FTC said that Facebook failed to tell users that it changed the settings so they could no longer restrict access to their name, profile, picture, gender, friend list, pages, or networks.
"Facebook's failure to adequately disclose these facts, in light of the representation made, constitutes a deceptive act or practice," the FTC said.
The social network also made public users' photos and videos even after their accounts had been deactivated.
The five , commissioners were split over whether to settle the dispute, with three voting in favour, one abstaining, and Commissioner J Thomas Rosch dissenting on the basis that Facebook had denied liability for its actions. He argued that it should at least be required to take the position that it neither confirmed nor denied liability – a position he also argued in dissenting from the 4-1 verdict over Google's fine. Google denied liability to the FTC; it was fined because it was already the subject of a consent order similar to that now tying Facebook.

Cloud Computing: Same Weakness Found in Seven Cloud Storage Services

1 komentar

Cloud storage services allow registration using false e-mail addresses and Fraunhofer SIT sees the possibility for espionage and malware distribution.

Security experts at the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology (SIT) in Darmstadt have discovered that numerous cloud storage service providers do not check the e-mail addresses provided during the registration process. This fact in combination with functions provided by these service providers, such as file sharing or integrated notifications, result in various possibilities for attacks.

Better Security for Web and Mobile Applications

0 komentar

Harvard computer scientists, including two undergraduate students, has developed a new tool that could lead to increased security and enhanced performance for commonly used web and mobile applications.

Called RockSalt, the clever bit of code can verify that native computer programming languages comply with a particular security policy.
Presented at the ACM Conference on Programming Language Design and Implementation (PLDI) in Beijing, in June, RockSalt was created by Greg Morrisett, Allen B. Cutting Professor of Computer Science at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), two of his undergraduate students Edward Gan '13 and Joseph Tassarotti '13, former postdoctoral fellow Jean-Baptiste Tristan (now at Oracle), and Gang Tan of Lehigh University.
"When a user opens an external application, such as Gmail or Angry Birds, web browsers such as Google Chrome typically run the program's code in an intermediate and safer language such as JavaScript," says Morrisett. "In many cases it would be preferable to run native machine code directly."
The use of native code, especially in an online environment, however, opens up the door to hackers who can exploit vulnerabilities and readily gain access to other parts of a computer or device. An initial solution to this problem was offered over a decade ago by computer scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, who developed software fault isolation (SFI).
